QSTPS PHILOSOPHY AND SCIENCE - REPETITION AND PATTERNS

AspectRepetitionPattern
Core ideaSomething happens againA meaningful structure or order emerges
FocusThe act of recurringThe relationship or rule among the recurrings
Requires meaning?NoYes (predictability, classification, etc.)
Variation allowed?Often minimal or noneUsually present (nature rarely repeats perfectly)
Scientific roleRaw data or processCrosscutting concept used to understand phenomena

Repetition

  • The simple act or fact of something occurring again.
  • It is the raw recurrence of an element, event, or structure—exactly or nearly exactly.
  • Examples: – A single note played over and over. – The same leaf shape appearing many times on a branch. – Measuring the same quantity multiple times in an experiment. – Day following night, again and again.

Repetition by itself can be mechanical or meaningless. It does not automatically imply order, predictability, or significance.

Pattern

  • A recognizable, regular, or meaningful arrangement that emerges from repetition (often with variation).
  • It involves structure, relationship, or rule that makes the repeated elements intelligible.
  • Patterns allow us to classify, predict, or explain.
  • Examples: – The alternating rhythm of day–night–day–night forming a cycle. – Petals arranged in a consistent spiral or radial symmetry. – DNA base pairs repeating in a specific sequence that carries information. – Seasonal changes that follow a predictable annual cycle.
